Paper Mache' Pumpkin

Paper Mache Pumpkin as seen on Good Things Utah

This is a really fun craft and children as young as three and four can be successful and accomplish this project. If you can, copy the instructions, help your children read through the instructions and follow the directions.
Materials Needed: a round balloon, newspaper, flour, water, colored tissue paper, glue, pipe cleaners, 6" piece of string, a pencil.
Instructions:
1) Blow up the balloon to desire size. Wrap the string or yarn around the knot in the balloon – this is for hanging the balloon while it’s drying between layers.
2) Make a mixture of flour and water – 4 Tablespoons of white flour to 1 cup of water, mix thoroughly – mixture is the consistency of thin frosting.
3) Cut or tear newspaper into 1 inch strips.
4) Dip one newspaper strip into the flour mixture and start covering the balloon with strips of newspaper. Continue until the balloon is covered entirely. Let the balloon dry for 24 hours. Repeat a second layer and allow to dry overnight.
5) Decide on how you’re going to decorate your Paper Mache’ balloon. We did a pumpkin design as seen on Good Things Utah.
6) Using colored tissue paper, cut the tissue paper into pieces that are 2” by 2”.
7) Place eraser end of pencil in middle of one piece of tissue paper. Wrap tissue around eraser. Lightly dip tissue in glue and glue onto Paper Mache’ balloon. Cover entire balloon.
8) After glue is completely dry, puncture balloon. Using pipe cleaners fashion a stem and leaves to glue into the hole left by balloon.
